Rosalind (Roz) Welsh

Rosalind Welsh lives and works year round in Damariscotta Maine. Her Canvases are created in a unique way that has developed over the years. Starting with a line drawing, she makes a pattern to use in a cutting out the shapes of canvas. She then sews them together to be hand stretched over a frame. At this point, like traditional canvases, she primes and paints. She started this in her days at art school. For painting classes she would get scraps of canvas from an older artist. When she ran out of usable pieces of Canvas to stretch on frames she started putting together the smaller ones, creating shapes and forms to paint on. Over the years, Roz continues painting traditional flat canvas in order to concentrate on the art of painting. She finds satisfaction working in both the sculpted and flat canvases. Roz says that the initial line drawing is crucial to the success of the painting. “If the lines are right the shadows and color will follow.”. The lines she works with are gestures derived from her life and environment.
Roz attended School of Visual Arts in New York City where she studied in the Fine Art department from 1975-1978. She exhibited her paintings, sculptures and installations in many venues in New York and New Jersey. In 1986 Roz relocated to her hometown, Damariscotta, where she concentrated on raising her son, and creating art.
