H.M. Saffer, II has a diverse background with a common creative thread. He was a successful songwriter and producer, chef, and studied at L’Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris. Born July 18, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, HM launched his career by exhibiting at a public art show at the tender age of six. Early in his career, he studied the traditional brush painting technique, sumi-e in Japan where he exhibited at the Galerie Musee and the Artbridge, at at the Kwai Fung Hin in Hong Kong. HM now has gallery representation both in the United States and internationally.
HM’s work is also influenced by Gustav Klimt’s landscape paintings, especially his use of a type of pointillism which has different sizes and textures, not the same brush stroke use by Seurat. HM also pays homage to his three of his other favorite artists – Maxfield Parrish, Van Gogh, and Monet. His work continues to explore methods of combining his Eastern and Western artistic influence, creating his own unique style.
HM prefers the malleability of oils and that they provide a link to the Old Masters, with more depth and luminosity. Also, they dry slower, allowing more time to go back, adjust, and fine-tune. Because of this slower drying time, oils work very well for painting en plein air (outdoors).
HM has instructed at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, Berkshire Community College, and Columbia-Greene Community College. He currently lives in upstate New York where he continues on his journey toward interpersonal visual expression.
